The 170...a Bonanza and J-3, all in one trip!

Post by russfarris »

Interesting trip today in ole' 43A. On my usual 200 nm trip to Greenville, NC at 7,500 feet I had at one point a 165 knot groundspeed! I made the trip in 1 + 20, a new FAI record :!:

Of course, I had to come back to Rock Hill, SC. With winds like this, the turbulence down low was pretty intense, so I climbed to 6,500 where it was smooth. 45 KNOTS GROUND SPEED! At that rate I would run out of gas before getting home, so I descended to 3,000, which was pretty bumpy (I hate turbulence), but the groundspeed was a much more reasonable 80 knots.

If I could always arrange for a 60 knot tailwind, I would never consider buying a another airplane. Interestingly, a Piper Arrow with some kind of air data computer tied in with his GPS reported winds aloft just north of my course of 310 degrees at 90 knots, at 9,500...wow.

My new engine has about ten hours, and is performing perfectly. I"ll post more in the "Engine overhaul, adventure in the making" thread...Russ Farris
