Painting Cleveland Mg Wheels

Post by 4-Shipp »

I am putting new tires on my 170 and wanted to take the opportunity to repaint my wheels. Out of curiosity, I priced the Sherwin-Williams paint and primer specified in the Cleveland Repair Manual. My local store has everything in stock, but only in gallon cans. The total for the primer/catalyst and paint is $125.34 plus tax! With a gallon of each, I could paint about every wheel in the association :P .

George, you said you used an enamel for the paint, but what did you use for primer? I have a good auto paint store in town that has about everything I could need but wanted to get some advise first.

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce,

Chief offers a "wheel paint" CA WP-Siler and CA WP-White for about $12.00 plus shipping - http://www.chiefaircraft.com

I had excellent luck with Krylon Glossy White over zinc chromate primer

George was pushing a laquer paint I think, his rationale being it's easier to see cracks forming. either one would be acceptable, no need to go get the S- W super paint in my opinion

Correct. I do not like enamels on wheels because many enamels (especially polyurethanes) will hide a crack. For the same reason I do not trust powder coatings on such parts.

I use silver lacquer directly upon the wheel....no primer.

Thanks, George.

Brand and source? Sorry if I seem obtuse, but when it comes to paint and the different types...I am.
