Cessna 170B Left Main Landing Gear

Post by N170CT »

Referring to my 3Feb 03 post, same subject, the aircraft is hoisted and left main gear spring removed. The floorboard rivets from left door post to the 0713495-26 Angle, attached to the 0713495-7 LEFT INBOARD MAIN LANDING GEAR SUPPORT Bracket have been drilled out. PROBLEM is, I cannot see a means to reinstall the seven large (-6??) rivets which attach this -26 angle to the floorboard. It appears to be necessary to remove those rivets and the remaining rivets in the left floorboard over the main landing gear box in order to raise the floorboard sufficiently to gain access to the cracked 0713495-3 OUTBOARD MAIN LANDING GEAR SUPPOT BRACKET. :(
I'm hoping there are some folks out there in Cessna 170 land who have worked in this area before and have a  solution they can provide. Until a solution is found, N170CT will be just hanging aroung  .

Chuck,

This may not be the answer you were looking for (or may not
be the simplest solution to your problem) but I'm helping
completely (ground-up) restore a '54 C-180. A friend & I had
the back *and* front floor pans drilled out and up/out of the airplane
in about 45 minutes.

Some might consider that overkill, but with the floor pan(s) removed,
think how easy it would be to clean the 45+ years-worth of belly-shmooey
that's always there!

You might try calling Pponk with this question. This company makes beefed up gear box components (including support brackets) for the 170 and could probably answer your question.

OK, thanks a lot. I have spoken to Steve earlier and his advice was: "Get a wife with small arms and hands". It appears the only access to this area is through two access holes, one in the lower forward belly of the aircraft and the second through a bulkhead, but this requires arm contortions of which I am incapable. Looks like I will have to use cherry rivets to secure the floorboard to this angle. Nevertheless, thanks for all the comments.
