I just thought I'd update this thread with regard to interchangeability of 170 and 190/195 elevators.

According to Cessna SLN -76, dated 6/8/48, the elevators are NOT interchangeable. (If you attended the Kelowna MX Seminar you have a copy of this SNL, found on Pg 3-1 of the Service Information Summary I handed out.)

"Subject: Non-Interchangeablility of the 190-195 Elevators and Cessna 170 elevators.

WARNING: tHE CESSNA 190 AND 195 elevators and the Cessna Model 170 elevators are not interchangeable.

The elevators for the 190 Series Cessnas, and for the 170 are built on the same jig. They are not interchangeable, however, because of one basic, but very important difference; the 190 and 195 elevators have counter-balancing weights in the elevator horns ahead of the elevator hinge line. The 170 elevators do not have any weights in them at all. The installation of a 190 and 195 elevator on the 170 and vice-versa may result in the development of flutter characteristics that may be dangerous. Extreme care and caution, therefore, is necessary to make sure that in installing elevators the correct elevator is installed on each airplane.

Identification on the two is simple. Each elevator has two holes on the inboard rib of the elevator horn. Look into these holes to determine whether or not any weights are installed in the horn. The weight material is easily seen and hte fact that there is, or is not, weight material in the elevator horn, cannot be mistaken.

It is suggested that this information be passed on to all Distributor and Dealer personnel involved."

An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)
