Thanks for the welcome Markeg1964... I love learning in a taildragger... :) No Check ride yet... but I am working on it and having loads of fun doing so. :D

Thanks for the compliment.
I think Jerrie Mock is amazing and wish she was more well known... Recently I tried to figure out why her name is not as well known as one would expect and bumped into the following article. Though the article mentions a couple of reasons I am still somewhat baffled. She will always be an aviation pioneer to me. :)

Quote from article...
"But in the months that followed her flight, the Southeast Asian war intensified, pushing her news quickly off the front pages of America's newspapers. And after writing her book, Three-Eight Charlie, in 1970, distribution glitches forced the book to have a limited release."

Margot,

Seveal years ago we met Jerrie Mock at a 180 Convention in Steamboat Springs, CO. She is a very interesting lady. She stated that she was going to write another book about her flight and include a lot of information in it that she could not include in her first book because of the Cold War which was on at the time. I don't think she has written it yet. Welcome to the 170 Club.

Welcome to the forum. I like the plane and the interior is quite good. You will enjoy flying the 170 as it flys well and very economical. At least you have many years to fly, I just got a late start.

Margot, your story takes me back. I learned to fly in 1970 at Barber's Point Naval Air Station (now John Rogers field), and I've made the trip across to Kauai a couple of times. We thought we were pretty well prepared because we wore inflatable life vests! 8O

1971: February, I flew a 172, N2712U, with my wife and another couple to Lihue. We rented a car, drove to some of the tourist spots, stayed overnight in a motel within good earshot of the surf (heavenly!) and flew home. That was my first long overwater flight, out of sight of land, and out of range of VORs because we were under a cloud deck. The Lihue lighthouse appeared right on schedule, right where it was supposed to be. Hey, this pilotage stuff really works! :D :D :D

In July of that year my wife and I flew an American Yankee (N5910L) from HNL to Port Allen (PAK) for a fly-in. There was a spot-landing contest that I remember was won by Bob Whittinghill's son in a Piper Colt. We camped near the beach at the east end of the runway and were overrun with mice. They joined us for breakfast, and were not at all timid about helping themselves to our breakfast as we were trying to eat it!

I'm always glad to hear from someone flying in Hawaii. It doesn't happen often. As we all do, I wish you as much aviating happiness as you can possibly bear! :D :D :D :D

If you were completely out of sight of land(marks).... wouldn't that be called "dead reckoning" rather than "pilotage"?

Harold,
Wow... that is neat that you met her! :)
I think there is/was a screen writer that wants to make a movie 'Three-Eight Charlie' but he has not been able to get a production company involved. :(
Anyhow, thanks for the welcome! Glad to be here. :)

Thanks John!

Jrenwick,
Wow... those sound like a lot of exciting trips! Once I am rated and experienced enough I am sooo excited to start doing inter-island camping trips! I was hoping to find a really small and light fold up bicycle to make getting around easier once I land. I was thinking Hana would be a great place to fly off to.
Now the question is.... ...do they make surf board racks for airplanes? 8O  8O
As for the mice... you might not have to deal with them if you ever come back.... A colony of cats has moved in there >^..^< .... Though I think they might eat more of your food than the mice.

Happy flying all!

Hi Margot!
Congratulations on buying your 170! Most of us can remember how exciting it was (and still is) to finally own one. Good luck with your license and enjoy your flying in Hawaii. The banter on this forum gets a little intense at times but just remember it's all in good fun between friends. Jump in with both feet and we'll try to help any way we can. Lots of 170 knowledge floating around here.

Today was the first time I saw this thread as I have been travelling the last couple of weeks. It was a coincidence that last week I was in Washington DC and saw Jerrie Mock's C-180 N1538C hanging in the Smithsonian Institute's Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport. I did not know it was there but was very pleased to see it hanging around with all the other famous aircraft.

Hey Margot,
Do you or anyone else for that matter know what kind of yokes the ones in the pics of your interior are?Just curious cause they are the same ones that are in my 170B & have been since I have owned it. Nice bird by the way,I know you will love flying her like the rest of us love our 170's.One of my earliest flights in a ( think it was the second) light airplane was in Hawaii in a 172 from Oahu over to Lanai & return, that was in 1963.Welcom to one seventydom!
