Scott 3200 Tailwheel source

Post by David Bengtson »

disassembled the tailwheel ass and found the fork casting with an internal piece broken across and above the hole that holds the little pin, part no. 3257. At minimum I need a new or servicable Fork Assembly. Also there is some wear on the Bracket Assembly spindle bolt and Arm Assembly spring holes show some elongation. So---I was thinking I'll just buy a whole new unit. Then sticker shock! 8O Univair wants $2821.38 for this thing. Spruce appears to only stock some parts. However Alaskan Bushwheel who apparently has acquired the 3200 rights sells it for 975.00. What is the difference? Will individual Alaskan parts work with the original Scott parts? Has anyone seen the Alaskan Tailwheel or had any experience with it? Thanks for any input or advice.

Dave...the Alaskan is essentially the same part. They've duplicated the assy. You should call them to reassure yourself...but I predict they will tell you the same thing. (And they might even be able to save you a few bucks if you're willing to send them your assy and ask them to fixi it.)

David, I have a AK Bushwheel spare. Yes they are identical to the Scott 3200. It is a good part source. The reason for the high sticker price is because of the availabilty of the scott. They dont make them any more. D

And I thought I was getting reamed at $600 in the early '90's for a ready-to-go brand new Scott from the Birddog folks. Looks like I should have bought several.

A friend of mine just put an AK Bushwheel tailwheel on his Citabria. On a whim, I took a picture of it last week.

Thanks to all for the imput. George, today I had a conversation with"Steve" the IA tailwheel guy at AK Bushwheels. I found him to be knowledgeable and helpful. I ordered the ABI 3200 Tailwheel Ass. complete. Evidently Scott was sold to an outfit called Avox which really didn't want the tailwheel business but had to agree to support it for the deal. So--they price it high enough that no one buys. Good thing patent rights have expired. Chief Aircraft Inc. informed me they have PMA for and are also making most of the internal parts. Haven't found relialble supplier for castings yet. Good to know our tailwheels are not dead! :D

George, I can't tell for sure are you using compression steering springs on this beauty?
