John-
That's the local Fredericksburg, Texas AM station, KFAN. They play both kinds of music, country and western.

Bruce-
I still have the original baffles and scoops in a box. When the engine was overhauled, Airforms built their first set of 170A airbox style baffles for me using my originals as patterns. The scoop is their version made without any compound curves. They are slightly larger than original and I liked their looks so I used them. Their flow rate is every bit as great and maybe more than original.
As you know, I'm not exactly a stickler for keeping the airplane stock.

I know the scoop is not stock ie Cessna did not make it. What I was saying, incorrectly, was that A models didn't have scoops. I should have double checked before I made that statement.
My A model, which is a '49 and like the '48 did not have them. But Cessna did start installing them sometime in the A model run. The IPC is no help when they started. Another minor detail of the Cessna production run to track down.

David,
I'm away from home now but I'd guess my original plenum cover was thinner than .032"--it seemed rather flimsy. If you take a look at Airforms baffling for the later C-170B's you can see .032" printed on the front horizontal baffling. That's what I would use if I were to make the plenum cover. The other thing I would consider using is a pair of piano hinges along the top. If I recall correctly the original has a tight radius where it hinges to the center aluminum. 2024T3 will crack with that tight of a radius.
.032 sounds about right. Mine is much thinner than that. The plenum cover doesn't even look like aluminum (the specks of rust may be a giveaway) and is probably left over home heating duct.
The piano hinge is an interesting idea. Mine just have a bent over lip and it slips into another lip on the center section. Makes for quick removal . I'd like being able to pup the covers off quickly. but if they were a little sturdier and had a hinge, I could prop them open easy enough and wouldnt need to remove them when doing the plugs.
But first, I need to build the garage in which to put the press break and shear
Gary-
Well, that's kinda true, but, when everything in the old panel is completely worn out and either has to be rebuilt or thrown away, the decision to go new with everything is easier. I knew I wanted some digital stuff and thought the mix of needles and numbers wouldn't look as good as all numbers, so that's what was done. Plus, the digital stuff appears to be more accurate. I would do it again if it was to be done over. The stall warning is original!
You are correct about the classical music though, C&W is much more to my liking!

Another possibility is when the O-300D was installed from a 1956 C-172, they might have taken the baffles from it and used them? By 1956, the 172 should have probably had a pressure cowl but the front baffles might be the same?

Richard,
Just razzing you about the panel and ADF freq.! I think it looks great. As does the front baffling. It looks like your front baffling is a melding of the original baffles and the 1959-60 C-172 baffling. I too would like retain the original airbox baffling but would like to update the front baffling and inter-cylinder baffling. I wonder how difficult it would be to update the inter-cylinder baffling at the same time to match what Rusty has. The original inter-cylinder baffling seems rinky-dink to me.

Don't think so Richard as later inlets were in a different position than yours (at least the right one) is. Yours look to be in the proper A model position. BTW the '52 B model also had 2" scat and scoops but they were in a different spot.
