Great blog!
You killed me with the veggie burger with bacon :)
The lack of a real weight and balance is an eye opener. When I was flying gliders we always had a good weight and balance.

I saw dry-ice blasting being done on the Memphis Belle, at the Air-Force museum in Dayton. Have no idea of the cost... But cleaned, and looked wonderful!

Too bad you can't just dip the whole plane in acid and alodine it.

Cleo Bickford had some wings soda-blasted and he was very disappointed. He ended up having to totally condemn them and completely disassemble, re-skin/re-construct them.

That black "crud" is anti-corrosion/anti-oil-cannning and isn't all bad if it's not out in view. Your penchant for "utilitarian" look will determine which way you go, but personally, I wouldn't remove that stuff. It serves a purpose, and I'd cover it with removable panels and get on down the road.

Like George said... I had a group of sail plane people I worked last year with. they soda blasted every thing....Not impressive. if you still need to clean up after, bead, or walnut shell sounds better to me.....Just saying... I only liked the idea of dry-ice cuz there's no clean up, if you are only cleaning rust or oxidation..

I'd contend that these are two somewhat different phenomena inthat one is specific and the other more generic. You rocket scientists and chemists out there: correct this if I'm mistaken. Oxidation is the addition of oxygen to another element to form an oxide. Rust is the result of oxygen added to Fe (iron) to form iron (ferric) oxide.

I soda blasted my bird and was pretty happy with it. It is a mess but it leaves a great surface to paint. Shop vac and garden hose and shop vac and hose and shop vac and blow gun and hose and vac and.......took a while but I HATE chemical stripper so I'm glad I did it.
