Really. I understand the owner now has a damaged airplane and it will cost more than it is worth to make it like it was before.

But someone is going to get a fairly nice example of a dimpled 170 with a whole lot of flying left in it.

Chicken pox? They look like someone painted dots all over the panel with the end of a paintbrush. Weird.

Without looking close at underlining structure it appears to me that the aircraft is airworthy. I'd say most of the damage is only cosmetic. Here's a clip from the Service Manual that concerns wing damage. Other paragraphs having to do with damage to the fuselage, tail feathers, etc., refer back to this section.

It would be interesting to see how much of the damage could be repaired by these paintless dent repair guys. Video on dent removal.

You guys who have aluminum construction skills probably would know if the dent removal process would work or not. They may work reasonably well on a steel door, fender, 1/4 panels, etc. Not sure the same would hold true with aluminum which stretches a good amount in a dent.

We had a 172 at our muni apt that sat out in a spring hail storm. The insurance adjuster examined the damage, took a sharpie and circled each hail dent (there were a lot of them, but none very deep/large) and declared it a total loss. The plane was insured for $40k. I think someone purchased the plane from the ins co with the intent to repair it.
