So whats wrong with this picture, the one Gary posted of N3470C. Or maybe more correct, whats wrong with the caption?

This is a "55 or later. See the rear window. It is serial 26513. Couldn't have been done in '53.

As many times as I have looked at the photo of the prototype 170-C that Wm Thompson has in his book I never picked up on the fact that it had a C-180 tail wheel stinger! Can't believe I missed it. While I didn't go back an read the article again I am pretty sure he said the "C" had the 172 tail feathers. Now I have to wonder if maybe they used a 180 vertical, but the trim is not set up as is a 180. So maybe the did use a 175 vertical (what was the first yr for 175'?) Maybe a 175 is identical ( vertical) to a 172. Ahh, the mysteries continue.

That picture is from Cessna 172: A Pocket History by Ron Smith. I assumed this was a Cessna prototype as the caption said it was "experimental" and said "Cessna Aircraft Company" in parenthesis. Good catch on the window shape though Bruce. Based on that my new guess is that it was in experimental category for operating with the door removed for skydiving and that it has the Met-Co-Aire tricycle gear STC.

Yeah, ... but it looks like they solved the door-hinge-wear problems....
