These guys have been doing Odyssey installations for a while, but don't seem to have an STC.

Re: Aviation Battery Thoughts
If the battery has a PMA, no STC is necessary. A PMA is the equivalent of an approved "part". The battery box (different issue) should be a fairly straight forward installation that can be field approved based on data applicable to the aircraft it is being installed in. If you plan to do something like this, it is recommended that your IA check with his/her PMI before installation to make sure everyone is on the same page. Most IAs would do that without reminding, and IAs are the best source of advice for this subject. The EDM product is an example of an aviation battery.DaveF wrote:These guys have been doing Odyssey installations for a while, but don't seem to have an STC.

Re: Aviation Battery Thoughts
Well I have seen many aircraft fitted with the Odessey battery and heard no complaints . So I fitted one (p 680) and after about 20 starts ,it seemed it wasn't receiving a charge from the alternator . But running the engine and checking all electrical parameters .aircraft wise it was all good. The Odessey came out and a Concord went in . 236 starts later (checked the log book ) it's still all good . Due to the expense of sending it back etc it's cheaper just to fit a new battery. However I was very surprised how well the concord ,s reserve capacity is . "Someone" NOT me left the master switch on for about 48 hours and the LED instruments lights on . I pushed the aircraft outside the hangar and it was a struggle but it turned the prop over and it started. Yes , it should have been on a battery charger but circumstances didn't allow it . However the "pink" gill battery's are junk . I have had new ones fail within 10hrs of operation but also had ones that have lasted 10 yrs of abuse . But this is rare.

I just checked the West Coast Battery website, the folks that sell Odyssey batteries, and went to their Aircraft section. The SBS-16 is now actually approved in the C-170 if that is the model you have, otherwise a field approval is required.

I did some calling around today, and ended up talking to the Odyssey factory itself. The SBS-16 is only approved in the 170 with the Atlee Dodge battery box STC. In other words, it is not a PMA replacement for the stock battery in the stock box. For that, you would need a 337. Odyssey does not do any approvals themselves. Everything is an independent STC. Doh! Hopefully someone will do a direct swap STC soon.
I manage to get a copies of the Atlee Dodge STC paperwork for what it's worth. Not a lot of rocket science there.
