That looks like a nice place to put the GPS, I might have to get a suction mount and try that. I've got a garmin 195 on a RAM yoke mount right now. Wasn't my most favorite location but better than always having to pick it up off the seat next to me or watch it rattle around on the dash.

I have my lowrance 2000 mounted the same place as Karl, works great and is a natural part of the scan. I placed the suction cup mounted antenna just above the left vent and ran the wire behind the piller post cover so it comes out between the ash tray; almost completely hidden. The big cup for the ram mount did look kind of strange at first, but I got used to it. You can also route the power plug behind the dash so it's hidden as well.

Ram makes 2 kinds of suction cup mounts. A large regular suction cup and a smaller twist lock version. The twist lock version holds much better and has a smaller profile. http://www.custommounts.com/RAM_Suction ... p_s/23.htm

I went to WalMart (but any fabric store should have it) to purchase a roll of "heavy duty" velcro self-adhesive tape. This stuff is 2" wide and several feet long. I cut two equally sized ovals out of the hook and loop sides, and stuck the loop onto the top if my glareshield, directly in the center of the panel. I stuck the loop oval on the bottom of my factory Garmin swivelling mount. (I threw their double-sided sticky tape in the trash.)
Now my Garmin 196 snaps into it's holder...which is velcroed on top of my glare shield, directly in the center of my panel where both pilot/copilot has equal access/visibility, and the antenna has a clear view of the sky thru the windshield.
I ran a power cable from my NAV circuit breaker to the GArmin, and therefore when my Radio Master is ON..my GPS runs off ship's power. (In case of elect. failure, the gps will revert automatically to it's internal battery power. The connection to the ships pwr thru the Nav brkr is a minor mod, logbook entry.)
With another oval of loops on my car dashboard, and another on my boat...the GArmin can be used for road nav and/or marine nav with no need to buy additional hardware. :P

Now George, we can't have our maint. person, sim instructor and upcoming convention host using an old Garmin 196. Have Jamie order you one of the 496's and get the subscriptions so you will really know were you are and what is going on. :wink: No hill for a stepper :P

GPS never tells you where you are going. It only tells you where you have been! :lol:

Same as Loran, eh? If I know where I was a half second ago, I can make a darn good guess about where I am now and where I'll be a half second from now. :wink: In a 170 they're all likely to be inside the same 175-foot circle.

Remember that the normal stock C-170 tears through the lower layers of the atmosphere at 168 1/3 feet per second at its normal cruising speed of 115 MPH!
