Dave,
I would leave the lifting rings on to aid in maintenance. If you ever have to work on the gear box area they sure would be handy. When I replaced the gear boxes on 45D we had to make a support to hold the plane up under the motor mount. Could even use them to change tires, repair brakes and etc. Ever tried jacking it up and the jack nearly fall when the spring gear relaxes from the removal of weight. Yours probably doesn't do that since it has those COOL looking 180 gear legs that are stiffer and hold weight better. I would check under the lugs for a nylon washer to help seal out water and to reduce the chance of corrosion if the lift rings are stainless steel before painting though. Randal

Dave,
Every 170 should have lifting eyes. Don't remove them. Maybe you'll never put skis on again, but you'll still want to pull gearlegs to magnaflux and inspect the gearbox and castings occasionally. They also come in real handy after you've ground-looped <g>.

If your lifting eyes are stainless they're probably not legal. There's a Cessna PN for them and it's a cad plated Chicago forging.

Good nough advice for me! The eye lifts stay! Thanks guys.
Maybe I should start a topic on cleaning a plane up from unesseccary bells and whistels before painting. I could take detailed pics from all over the plane before. And get ya'lls help on recognizing things that could be removed and things that could be added if needed. Kinda like a class project, right down to the Bartones. Randal told me PM that after the new paint is on, I'll not want to back a screw out. Just barely thought of removing the old lights after hearing something in our discussions.
Guess I'll leave those little brackets at the bottom of the engine mount for ski rigging? Would have to lift the engine and pull the mount away from firewall. Will strip the other Atlee Dodge Ski Hardware.
And get the old screws out where the old Venturi's were, back in the 70's. And the antenna mast thing above the window in front of the gas vent. Stuff like that
