When installing an electronic tach, annother factor to consider is the RPM at which the tach starts counting hours. The UMA tach, which is the one I wanted to use but was discouraged by the manufacturer, starts counting at 1800 RPM. The tach I ended up with, a digital read out, started counting hours at 800 RPM. That is too low to suit me.
It is something to consider when contemplating a new instrument.

A lot of verrry interesting comments. Does anyone have any experience with the Horizon P-1000 tach?? Was seriously considering installing this tach in my 0-300C powered 170B. Does it suffer the same limitations as the other digital tachs mentioned???

The electronic tachometer of which I speak in the post above is a "Horizon". The constant flopping of the digits bugs me and I don't like the hour count starting at 800 RPM.'

I have to agree with the vrs comments made by others regarding the problems with elec. tachs. Too bad we can't get one similiar to the electric tachs we used to see as add ons to our older vehicles that had an analog needle instead of digits. Some enterprising sole needs to develop one as I think there would be a market for them.

Miles, which one did you end up going with? The one that uses 2300rpm for cruise, or the one that uses 2400rpm for cruise? :?:

To tell you the truth Craig, this had totally slipped my mind. :oops: I will probably go with the one that counts at 2400, since it's closer to the 2450 for our engine. (Also, it won't rack up hours as fast! :wink:) If I can, I'll get it marked per George's reccommendation.

Just ordered mine today (the one that counts at 2400). With hour meter set and custom markings, it will be shipped in 3 days from Aircraft Spruce.

Craig, Have you recieved your tach yet? I am curious as to how well the markings are done.

I recommend having the tach read "Zero" (Time Since Overhaul)

All of the above. :D They are the same on my airplane; 1310 hours.

The tach came in today, and the markings look great! I'm very impressed with the looks and hope to get it installed sometime in the coming week.

New tach is on and works like a charm! Wish I'd gone this route in the first place rather than having the old one rebuilt and refaced.

Finally got my new tach yesterday. I purchased from Spruce, but the markings (per George's suggestion) were silkscreened at the Mitchell factory and drop shipped to me. The whole process took about 2 weeks. According to the calibration card, it should work as well as it looks. The needle is right on 300, but I had to take an oblique to keep the flash from washing out the face.
