Lee;
I am in my 80's now and my hanger floor is 5 inches above grade .it is impossible for me to pull into or out of my hanger alone. I solved the problem by anchoring a 4 inch wide thin wall steel channel to the middle of the floor of the hangar .this guides the tail wheel into the hangar. I purchased a 12 volt winch from Harbor Frieght took off the heavy 1/4 inch cable and put on 50 feet of 1/8 inch 50 feet long.I have a eye bolt in the tail wheel spring assembly and use a battery booster to run my winch.I throw the switch & guide the tail wheel into the steel channel ,go sit down and watch the plane being pulled back into the hangar.The winch is very slow so you have a lot of time to observe .When it is time to pull the 170 out of the hanger ,I have secured a snatch block pulley at the entrance
beside the steel channel start the winch and go over and sit down until the plane is out on level ground. Cost = winch $60.oo ;cable 27cents per foot,
snach blocks etc.$10 Steel channel 25 feet (2 pieces butt together) ?

Yes George;
I did forget the" Y "and happy to see you are paying attention. I enjoy these
posts so very much ,they are so very helpful and educational for those of us not too acquainted with C170's since most of my life was in a C195B.
May God keep you safe;

Sorry I can't rotate the last one - I'm at work and don't have the original images here. Yes, my tailwheel will probably spit grease at you if you walk past :lol:

Hope that helps!

tshort I have a similar "taildragger". I used it on my Champ with no problems. however, after using it on the C170 for several months I noticed chips in the metal wheel lip on the side the metal bar contacts the wheel. I can't prove it, but I suspect the "taildragger" is responsible for the chips in the metal wheel lip. I wwnet back to the classic style that clamps onto the tail wheel axle.

Bush Wheels sells a tow bar that does not spred apart when pulling or pushing and the price was good also.
