To expand the lifter discussion a little. There are two types. The old style has no clip at the edge to keep the hydraulic unit and top seat inside the lifter body. The new style has a groove at the top to except a spring steal clip which holds the hydraulic unit and top seat inside. The groove can be seen at the top pf the lifter body John showed us.
Problem is you probably don't know what type are in your engine. I know my 0-300 has all clipped units because I installed them. My C-85 Cub engine has half clips and half unclipped. I know, I installed them.
If your lifters are not clipped and you pull the push rod out and there is enough oil to cause the top seat of the lifter unit to stick to the rod then you will pull the top right out and into the lifter covers you see bolted to the case halves at the end of the push rod tubes. Then when you turn over the engine the lifter body is jammed between the lifter top seat and the housing and the lifter body breaks.
If you have to remove the push rods and you think you may have pulled the lifter top out DO NOT ROTATE THE ENGINE CRANK SHAFT.
