Joe I think what George is saying is that with one cotter pin hole and if the nut only had one hole the worst you would have to do is tighten the nut a half turn. But of course the castle nut has 6 positions or slots so you should never have to tighten more than a sixth turn past no play to line up a cotter pin.

[quote="Joe Moilanen"]I'm hoping you didn't really mean a HALF turn George.....(:

Joe

 I meant to turn it to the next available hole.

Some of the axle nuts for wheel pants had only one set of holes drilled through in one flat. Your simple solution would be to set the nut in a vise on A DRILL PRESS and carefully measure, align and then drill two other sets of holes. SHAZAM! Same spacing as a castellated nut.

My only question is your description, WOBBLE"! Although not the final solution, an axle nut, backed off a 1/2 of a turn, should never cause the wheel to "WOBBLE" and is in the ball park! Something else seems to be amiss. I don't have one in my hand but I am just guessing the threads ( pitch ) would somewhere in the vicinity of 12 threads per inch. Turning the nut on the axle one complete turn only advances or retracts the face of the nut about .085 of an inch, ( 1/6 of a turn is equivalent to .014 of an inch AND one half a turn is only .042 of an inch). "WOBBLE" at that clearance should be almost nil. If you back the nut off a half turn you would have .040 of endplay but no "WOBBLE" .
