Ryan,...if you read the thread I had linked to... you might have noticed it included a link to Allied Electronics where you can order that exact rheostat for $35. They have 319 of them in stock as of this moment.
Here's the link contained within that previous link again: http://www.alliedelec.com/ohmite-rhs100e/70022460/

Hope that helps.

I called Cessna and gave them the numbers from the Cessna 170 IPC. They have the rheostat. But it is $75.00.

I was testing your memory. You passed.

Thanks again, George!

This is a little off topic but related. What's the latest thinking about whether red should still be used for instrument/cockpit lighting? I've heard that it does not preserve night vision as much as originally thought. I've never liked the fact that it washes out anything written in red.

Mr. Smith:

Our records indicate that you do not hold an FAA Repairman's certificate, nor do you hold a provisional. We will be sending a representative out to your home field to watch a qualified AMT complete the repairs on this aircraft.

Enjoy paying that shop bill. Merry Christmas from your pals in Oke City!

We now use a blue which is both better for night adaption and more NVG compatible. You do use NVGs don't you?

Oh sure! Doesn't everyone? My cousin has a pair of toy NVGs that he bought from a big box store for fun. I was shocked at how well they worked. I went down into a windowless part of his basement, put them on and closed the door. It was pitch black but I could easily see everything in the room. I could even read the labels on boxes. I'm not sure of the technology they use, but I was impressed given they were a cheap plastic toy.

Blue you say? May be tough to implement in our 170s.

If I had a dollar for every time I could have gotten in trouble with the FAA... 8)

Lamp sockets arrived from TEDSS today. I'll compare to my original when I get home, but I think these will work. Rheostat is due in next week. I'll place my Spruce order for Tefzel and shock mounts, and hopefully get this ball rolling. Between the new panel lights, my recent addition of original equipment assist straps, and the Rosen sunvisors (long, happy story- after being told that you couldn't put Rosens in by our mechanic, I finally convinced the owner that they could, so Wednesday she told me she got some for "our airplane"), I think 56D is going to have a good Christmas.

Looks like I'll have to resize images. I'll post them when I get home.

Ryan-
On the Rosens, some people install them with the bracket-forward which leaves a gap between the Rosen and spar carry-thru/top of windshield allowing sun to shine thru. If they are installed bracket-aft, complete sun shading can be achieved. Something to think about and personal choice but I prefer not to have sun shining in my face thru that gap.

Will earmark that, Richard. Thanks! The Rosens shouldn't be in for another two weeks, but when they get in, I'm sure I'll supervise the situation.

See pictures of the lamp sockets below.

Thanks Arash! I don't know if she got the articulating arms or not. I'll quiz her tomorrow. Regardless, we've been making a lot of flights due east at daybreak, and if if weren't for my BlockAlls, I'd be miserable. In fact, before I started flying under the hood, I was miserable, even with normal foggles.

Richard - do you have a picture of the aft bracket installation? Does that mount on the front face of the carry through spar?

Ryan,
Here is another way of mounting the Rosen's with the bracket forward that closes the gap at the top that Richard was talking about. It does require a few minute on the Bridgeport to remove the cuff on the back side of the bracket.

Below is a picture of the bracket-aft mounting which eliminates mid-day sun from hitting you in the eyes thru the gap left by mounting bracket-forward. If you have the seaplane cross-brace the Rosens work much better mounted this way and come with the lower outside corner already cut to miss them. They mount to the bottom of the spar same as if you mount them bracket-forward. Again, it is personal preference which way to mount them.

I do not have the gimbal mount that gives 3rd axis adjustment and I do not miss it at all. If I was much shorter I might need to angle the 3rd axis down to get shade but as it is, I sit tall enough the 3rd axis isn't needed. Some say the shades are too close to their face when mounted bracket-aft but I do not have a problem with it as they are always angled to the front anyway by varying degrees so it is not a problem. Plus, the farther away the shade is from your eyes, the less area of shade coverage there is, closer to your eyes shades more sky. I always fold the Rosens forward, I don't want to hit them with my head so I do not fold them aft. Having them closer to my face is much more desirable than having mid-day sun shining in my eyes thru the gap.
