Yes, I had a great time lying on my back with the rudder pedals as a pillow , 110 deg in the hangar and no air movement and sweat running down my arms and running in my eyes as I was trying to put a washer and nut on a millions of screws stuck through from the other side ( well about 36 of them ) I was only wearing a pair of shorts and the sweat buildup between the floor and my back made it very slippery. It nearly came to super glue time . OH what fun .
Oh! I forgot 5 pesty flies that wouldn't leave me alone . 8O

Hmmm mental note to self. Good decision to install windshield in hanger in PA, USA, on a 75 degree day rather than in Australia in a 110 degree hanger. :D

I'll be doing it in either my air conditioned or heated garage, depending on what month I get to that project.

I got 95D's windscreen out. It already has an STC for a one piece (cant remember which) so she'll stay strapless.
The idea of making aluminum strips with nut plates sounds like a very good idea - I might have to copy that.

Does anyone know of a good/easy way to remove RTV silicon from aluminum? It seems the previous owner didn't read the installation instructions and used what looks like two or three tubes of silicon on the lower edge :(

POLYGONE 310-AG

Looks like Spruce sells it at $100 a gallon or $22 for a 6 ounce tube.

The 52 doesn't have a defroster vent. That's a big hole from some old piece of hardware. Is the vent effective? I was debating to add it since I'm putting in the later model heat vent system.

Not sure if they all had two handles or not. My experience is fairly limited to the '52.

I have found that regular old CRC Brakleen cuts silicone. It is made to do that though the silicone it is made for is silicone grease. In many cases the material the silicone is on will also brake down with an application of Brakleen ruling it's use out of the picture for that project. BEWARE

It will not just melt it off. Cut it will break down the silicone in some time. I would spray the silicone after removing as much as possible mechanically. I'd then souk a rag in it Brakleen and let the rag lay over the silicone until it starts to break down. It is an experimental process that has worked better than any other thing I've tried.

I've used regular CRC Brakleen in the red and the eco in the green as well as knock off brands of brake parts cleaner.

And I think the last thing I cleaned with this was the silicone in my 170 window channels.

You mean to say that some of the fancy newer 170's had defrosters? What luxury!

Nice looking Starduster Too!

Wood prop on a IO-470? Wow, never seen that before! As long as the thread is hijacked....... I have a 8' fixed pitch Curtis Reed metal prop with a 20 spline that will fit on the Jacobs engine on the 195. I wonder how that would work? It sure looks cool.

OK, back on topic, with the defroster pointing at one spot on the windshield, the thicker windshield would be preferred over the thinner ones as I have seen windshields with deformation right above the defroster outlet due to the heat.

My '53 only has the one in the middle

Might have been a chemical reaction between the windshield material and the suction cup as opposed to mechanical deformation? Never heard of that before either, no telling what the Chinese put in their elastomers. Strange.

Hopefully the damaged area was down on the left side of the windshield out of the normal line of sight.

Arash,
Did you give any thought to mounting the suction cup on the outside of windshield on the deformation to pull the recess back out? I wonder if doing that and carefully adding some heat from the inside with a heat gun might have worked. Probably too late now that it has been sanded/polished. Obviously something to try on some scrap before potentially making scrap out of your windshield.

... and a carb temp of -5. Beautiful panel! You're right, even zooming in I can't see any blemish.

If you weren't looking for it and I didn't point it out, you'd never notice the imperfection in the windshield.

I'll save you the trouble of zooming in on the photo.

The blemish is quite obvious, Arash.

You've got a center strap. I guess with ADS-B we can all put center straps in because that 172 at 12 o'clock will be visible on our iPads now and we won't need to crane our necks around that sliver of space to check for traffic.

What's a compass? Is that like a GPS for baby boomers?
