That's a lot higher fuel flow than I get at 1000 msl. I assume you have an MA-4-5 carburetor. Which one? 10-3878? 10-4164?

Also, at OSH you showed me your door seals but I forgot what kind you said you used.

Well the fuel flows are about the same as I get and I am running a fixed pitch prop a Sensensich with a 60in pitch . But what speeds do you get from different RPM, S . Do you set it at 2550 or 2500rpm. I have found a phenomena in different engine speeds . At 2500rpm my airframe speed is 116 kts but bump it up to 2550 rpm my airspeed jumps to 127 kts . Both checked with the ASI and 2 GPS. But each GPS can be 1KT also . However with the increased airspeed and RPM the nose has to be trimmed down a lot more . The best height to fly at is 8000ft as the engine really purrs.

This was another topic I missed somehow and have not read until now. There is some remarkable craftsmanship and obvious attention to detail. Great job! I like to see these old birds breathe again.

Well John, we have the same sounding names but we both spell it differently . Eg it's Jon for me . My last name was spelt the same as yours but changed during the Second World War to make out we were more English Anyway off the subject . I have done nearly the same major mods as you and was very interested in your performance figures. I had to run a fixed pitch prop ( 60 ins pitch) . It's a Sensenich . This was due to the C of G . Even now is a little way too forward but within limits. MT props didn't have a STC for the 170 when I did my rebuild on my aircraft . My engine is also carbureted and have found all cylinders nearly the same in EGT , but the two front cylinders run about 50 degs cooler. Except in a heavy steep climb from 4000ft to 8500ft there was about 120 degs diff between the front cylinders and the rear cylinders. My cylinders heads got to 410 deg and that's when I flatten out the climb. That's the hottest it has ever got . Now they sit around 340 deg in cruise. How ever at 2000rpm my fuel flow is a lot less (6.6 us gals) . At 2300 rpm about the same fuel flow . Speeds about the same for the figures you gave .
