Someone should collect some data on how many hours have been flown for years without the fuel pump installed or any other modifications to the fuel system and if it has ever created an incident or accident.

I have a 1948 Cessna 170 that i've owned since 1995 with no fuel pump , and just recently found out from my new AME that a fuel pump is required !
Having at least 5 AME's over the years and this was not brought up !
So looks like I need to install a fuel pump or my preferred option would be to re-route the fuel lines.
Hello, Gary! and WELCOME to the forums!
This is an older thread to which you’re responding and the OP may not revisit it and/or know you’re asking a question.
You might attempt to reach him via the Private Message feature. (and another method would be to join the Associ’n and have access to the Membership Directory and be enabled to make direct contact.)

YOU are NOT the first owner to discover they’ve been operating illegally without a pump on a ‘48 model. We were approached-by and asked about this same situation by Three Partners who’d been flying without a pump for a number of years…..they were based at the FAA’s Home Airport…OKC…and when I responded to their question I mentioned how lucky they were not to have a knowledgable FAA Inspector place a “Condition Tag” on their airplane (which would legally “ground” the airplane)….. they responded that ALL THREE of the partners WERE FAA Inspectors. 8O

They installed the pump, check valve, and associated plumbing for their solution…but if it were myself… I’d re-route the system to match an A-model.

An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)
