Are you implying that you can set the pitch the prop for any RPM you want to achive up to redline with the McCaully 170A or 1C172? Because there is no approval to exceed the limits specified in the TCDS for these props.

Now if your talking about the McCauley 80/4x prop then you are limited by the STC which might be 2700 RPM I don't know.

Too much blather about the TDCS and props will give you gray hair. No REAL pilot wants that!
If you want to climb fast, get a skinny prop. If fast cruise is your thing, get a fat one. Don't tell anyone.

bigrenna wrote:Kenmore STC is same redline as TCDS, but I was not talking about the pitch of the prop. With respect to the 8042, I was saying you dont have to worry about over reving on climbout if you pitch the airplane to airspeed. When I was climbing (like a raped ape) the lower airspeed always meant lower RPMs. I could over rev the prop if I firewalled it straight and level, but thats what the tach was for. I just didnt to that.
I agree but I assume your installation was per the STC and any limits it may have had and therefor a legal installation.

With the McCauley 1A170 or 1C172 you must meet the static RPM limits specified. Has nothing to do with redline, climb attitude or airspeed. So Thad probably won't be able to pitch his prop to 48 or 49 as was suggested by the prop shop.

Blue, I wish there were IA's your age. That is a compliment using the voice of reason.

Bruce,
I agree that I will have to stay in the RPM range of 2230-2330 to be legal. If I'm getting a true 2240 static RPM then I should be able to pitch my prop to a 48 and still be at 2330RPM using the stats I received from McCulley. Thanks for also including the 1C172/MDM into the conversation. I had not even considered that prop!

The way I read and understand the STC on the 1A175DM8042 is that it does not have a static number associated with that prop. So my interpretation ( I'm not a lawyer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express one time) is that you can legally have a static run up to max RPM which we all know is 2700RPM. I'm waiting on a call back from the local FISDO on this. (Kidding!)
They only work four days a week these days.

Greg, Silly question, Come on man! I own an aircraft instead of having a friend that has one. What could be more silly than that? Do you want to be my friend? Seriously, with love of course. What was your static number with your old prop (what exactly was your old prop?) compared to your 1A175DM8042 ? I do like the 1100' per minute climb.

What would be the cruise speed difference between a 8042 or 8043? I'm guessing about 5MPH but have no data to prove it.

I suppose it's crtainly possible, but I've never heard of an insurance claim being denied due to an unapproved part on an airplane. I've also never heard of an insurance adjuster going over an airplane looking for something like that.

MAYBE if the unapproved part or modification was the direct cause of the accident, I could see them trying that.
But they'd need to have that as a clause in the paper work just like flying without a medical or an 'un-named' pilot.
That's why I carry Avemco...no BS like that.

I like my EM7651 I have now but I might pitch it back to 53 inches. 90% of my flying is at sea level, two people and over 2000 foot paved runways. No real need for a climb prop.

There used to be a fellow that operated an old flat back, square tailed, C-172 out of Johnson Creek Airport up in Idaho (Field Elev.4930 ft.). He had a 42 inch pitch prop and said it was perfect for up there, but not too good on a long cross country trip. Climbing is the name of the game up in that country.
