I am trying to replace a light bulb in the panel between the oil pressure and the oil gauge on my c170. I can't get ahold of the bulb to pull it out of the tube it fits in. Any suggestions?

If you got at it from the back of the panel, you can remove the mount from the panel.
It's a sprung clip. squeeze it and it released from the panel. Swap the bulb and pop it back in.

Here is a picture of the socket and bracket it it attached to. You should be able to see that squeezing the bracket as David said will release the whole socket from the panel. The sockets in the picture are new sockets obtain a few years ago from a fellow 170 owner with as much time at work to search the internet and find such things. The vendor does not list them any more but perhaps more are out there somewhere if anyone is looking.

I'll try that thanks. I am pretty sure it's just a long tube that the back screws into and holds the bulb tight but I will try what you said and see. My 170 is a straight 1948 model

I am still trying to replace a bulb on my 1948 170. I was told it was a spring clip, but when I look at the back there is just a tube that the back unscrews off of. Without having to take the whole front panel off is there any way to get the bulb out of the tube it's in. I can't believe it is this hard to change a bulb even if it is 1948 technology?

Hmmm. the spring clip type is the stock light. You might have after market lights. No telling what you have. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Have you joined TIC170A by paying dues? I only ask because we could upgrade your forum privileges then allowing you to post a picture of what you got. I can't imagine someone here hasn't seen it and knows how to change the bulb.

If so you just pull the hood of the tube which will have the bulb in it. Pull out the bulb and replace it. Push the hood and with bulb back on to the post.

I will head up to my hanger tomorrow and take a pic. I just joined the club today I paid my dues so I should be able to send pics I hope.

At work I use various sizes of rubber tubing to grasp the bulb and turn them.

You can often use a piece of tubing over the bulb if you cannot remove from the back.

Well someone did NOT have a better idea when they put that one in! they probably figured they would never have to change the bulb so what the heck

If I remember right, the instrument panel that light is attached to comes off with three screws, should be able to get to bulb without taking instruments all the way out, just remove screws and move panel back far enough to get to bulb.

So I was able to get the bulb out by unloosining two screws on the back of the panel and access the bulb. It was not easy but I did It. Thanks Bruce, and thanks Richard for the tip to unloosining three screws it worked. I ordered a replacement led bulb to replace the ge bulb that I took out. I hope it works.
