August A. Asay (the Manager of Anchorage Aircraft Certification Office) has written a letter authorizing 8.50x6 , 4 ply tires on Cessna 180, 182, 185 and 179 series aircraft.

This letter is dated March 26, 2013 and addressed to Mr. Krache of F. Atlee Dodge Aircraft Services.

this letter may be found under the FAQ column of the F. Atlee Dodge Aircraft Services web page.

A 337 is required to note the change of equipment and weight and balance.

I believe it is all the authorization required to install 8.50x6 tires on a Cessna 170 in Alaska

MauleOne,
Have you no respect for the people who make every attempt to defeat simplicity?

Not that I have a dog in this fight but...
The party poopers will cry out that Cleveland wheels and brakes are not "original main wheel gear wheels" so this document does not apply

bagarre,
That's the spirit. Don't let simplicity overwhelm complexicity. (or whatever)

8.50s just look "right" on the 170! I may seriously consider removing the wheel pants and put on a set.

I think there are basically three looks of a 170. The first, is stock wheel pants . Pretty but not my style. Then there are larger tires, 7.00 to 8.50. I,m currently running 7.00 and think they look fine and about right fo a 170 that sees pavement and NE grass fields. 8.00 and 8.50 tires are for a 170 operated from a farm. I like 8.00 the best but like the price of the cheaper 7.00 better.

170s with bear 6.00s are aircraft who's owners haven't commited to one of the other better looking options.

The BEST solution is to get them up and out of the slipstream with a retractable gear....
But since Cessna wanted to keep this thing inexpensive and affordable and low-maintenance...they did the next-best thing and made them reasonably sized for the purpose of grass runways as well as pavement and speeeeed by making them 6:00 X 6....and offering them with RED wheel fairings!
