Hey, not to drudge up an old thread, but I have a question for Aryana. How did you mount your GoPro??? I mounted a Sony cam like the GoPro to my wing (made a thicker inspection panel with holes for mounting) and the vibrations were terrible. The belly mount was better, although there was still some vibrations. I was interested in a wingtip mount like yours to get a better perspective of the plane and terrain. Thanks!

Inspection covers flex too much to be a good mount point (As you have mentioned).

I mounted mine by modifying the GoPro mount system to accept a flush head screw and steel flush washer. This way, I can move the mount to any inspection hole or wing tip screw. I'll take a few photos of the system when I get home.

Most people skirt the approval issue by using the suction cup or adhesive and calling it temporary. Mounting with a screw, although safer may cause more questions.
I'm surprised the FAA hasn't had a more vocal reaction to externally mounted devices on certified airplanes.
Depending on where you mount the camera, it is quite possible to change stall and or trim characteristics.

Been playing with one of these

Still have some bugs to work out with the go pro attachments but the strut mount is very nice. Pricey but nice.

Would it be appropriate to put a $1K diamond on a plastic ring, or a Ferrari on go-cart tires?

You dont put a $1,000 diamond on a $900 ring
Nor do you put $85,000 tires under a Ferrari.

A mount shouldn't exceed half the value of the thing it's holding.

Hoo, Boy! Just what we need! More amature home movies coming up.
I am trying to have a law passed that will require q thirty day course in editing a prerequisite for the purchase of a "Go-Pro" type of device.

I'm just sayin'.... a $125 mount for a $200 camera doesn't seem out of place to me... I wouldn't want to risk losing $200 by using a cheap mount....

I mean...using a cheap mount on a good camera would be like puttin' cheap mogas into an expensive plane...

Hell, that ain't nothin'. I designed and built a video camera mount (specifically for an R-44 helicopter, but works with a 170) that I sells for $6,750.00 and that doesn't include the three gyros that cost 3.5K each. I'll attach a Utube video of my first flight with it. I was one gyro short and just starting the learning curve, but it works well with practice. Can I remove the front seat legally myself??????? Just kidding, we don't need to get THAT thread started.....

But did you strap a $200 camera to it?? ;)

Blueldr I agree, if I could find a video editing program that made sense it would help! But mostly the video is just to assist the NTSB. I don't want to waste tax payers money :)

I like saving money and designing m own solutions for things when necessary but my time is valuable. Someone already had the solution and it works well without risk of damage to my plane. 125.00 is cheap.

Would you like for me to edit the video of the Hooter's girls washing my planes or see the entire film?

The cameras that get strapped to my mount cost more than our 170s do....but of course our 170s are of a much greater value to us real peoples...

I was going to let a friend use my plane to chase the Iron Dog this year. I told him to go-ahead and mount a few of the surfbord go-pro mounts that are stuck on by adhesive. He used alcohol to clean the area and stuck them on...... 7 of them to be exact..... o well, I need to remove them but I have been using them for diffrent views and not one of them has failed, yet. Im sure if I got ramp checked I might be in a little trouble but I would make sure and tell them how much help the video would be in the accident investigation! http://youtu.be/bKG-J0xnkSw
