Dear George, Bruce and Gang;
I`m ready to order new controll cables and glass (original flat type) for my A-Model Ser. 19620. If anyone has ordered these items lately and have been happy with the company I would appreciate the information.
Thank you for your consideration and any suggestions.
Sincerely
Mike Schwab

Hi Mike,
Recently I installed a LP Aero one piece in my A model and and happy with it and LP Aero. This is not the windshield you want if you want original but i'd trust the original style to be just as nice as the model I got.

I've not ordered control cables (yet) but if I did I'd give heavy consideration t McFarlene

Hey Bruce;
All my cables appear to be original. Should all the chains and trim tabs be replaved or just the "main" cables???

Mike, I'm not one to replace something simply because it is 60 years old unless it's condition warrants it. Exceptions would be something that deteriorates but condition can not be determined and the part has a history of breaking. The main tail spring comes to mind here.
So I personally would not replace the cables unless they showed signs of wear or corrosion. I also would not replace the chains unless I felt they were worn or corroded and then you would need sprockets as well in all likely hood. Haven't heard of a catastrophic chain failure, come to think of it haven't heard of a catastrophic cable failure of a cable without wear or corrosion either. Rudder cables seem to be the usual cables to replace because they corrode where they exit the fuselage.

If you decide to replace all cables & chains, McFarlane offers kits that contain all the cables. If you get the galvanized steel version, beware that the Illustrated Parts Catalog contained an error (

shocking, I know) with the longer flap cable that runs under the floorboards to the handle. The IPC incorrectly lists a longer cable by about 6". It does, however, correctly list the stainless steel version in the float plane provisions part of the IPC.
I mention this because McFarlane based their kit off of manufacturer data...in the case of the galvanized steel cables, incorrect data. After much detailed analysis of original engineering drawings, I did find the error and discussed this with McFarlane. The resolution was that they sent me a stainless steel version of that cable and paid for the shipping of the incorrect (but correct

) cable. I was very happy with the fit and function of all the other pieces in the kit as well as their customer service.
I should mention that this was applicable to the 1950 A-model (mine is 19204). I do not recall what serial number the flap system changed at.

Mike, when you are shopping around for the windshield and other stuff too, make sure you get a shipping quote as well. I have found that many companies advertize competitive prices on their products and then overcharge you on the shipping. I was checking on a windshield once and was told the shipping cost would be more than the windshield. One company wanted me to just give them my credit card but couldn't even tell me how much shipping was going to be, I don't think so. The best shipping quote was with the Cee Bailey windshield I bought. Everyone else seems to give them positive comments on here but they may not have the original type windshield you are looking for.
