What models of 0-300 are appropriate for the 170A? I have a project 170A with no engine. I am looking at an 0-300D. Is this ok?

The Association owns the STC that permits any (Im pretty sure) of the O-300's on the 170.
I have an O-300-D on mine with the STC.

The answer to your question is: The original engines are found in the Type Certificate.
Generally, the original C-145 and C-145-2 engines may be replaced directly with an O-300-A engine.
Other models of O-300 may be substituted but...be aware you may run into propeller and spinner differences which may influence your decision. (O-300-C and -D engines use 6-bolt propeller flanges on their crankshafts...inlieu of the original 8-bolt.)
