C-145 Engine Case and Crankshaft Costs:
You can buy a case and crank; but what is the true cost?
What should someone expect to pay for a C-145 Engine Case - both halves that has been inspected and Yellow Tagged? What about the Crankshaft cost total for buying one, having it inspected, attended to and Yellow tagged?

True cost is what it costs to attain it. Not sure what you are asking. If you are asking where can I buy the cheapest case halves and crank that are yellow tagged then you will get a different response. Call any of the engine builders and they can quote you prices. D

I was asking what people thought a reasonable price for a yellow tagged counter-balanced crank and the cases for for a C-145 might be. I know I can buy stuff that hasn't been inspected for one kind of price. I was asking for input on what to expect the total cost to be to get reliable yellow tagged parts.

I am asking basic questions as I am somewhat of a beginner at all this stuff. So thanks to anyone who offers good advice.

Due to the supply (or lack of) of serviceable cranks for the C-145, this is a very loaded question.
A NEW crank for an O-300 (which is an IO-360 crank) goes for $10,000 (So I've been told).
And with that new crank, you'll have to buy a different propeller 'cuz it's a 6 bolt where your C-145 is an 8 bolt.
I'm pretty sure they stopped making 8 bolt C-145 cranks around the time I was born and I'd imagine that if someone went thru the trouble of inspecting and yellow tagging an 8 bolt crank, it was because they were about to stick it in a motor and not on a shelf for later use.
So, we're trying to set a price for a collectable antique item needed in very good condition.
An item, that if not available, will render a $30,000 airplane useless.
So, if I had one (I don't, sorry) and I knew all of the above and it was serviceable, I'd think it was worth at LEAST 50% of the new part. And the new part is the cost of the crank and the cost of a serviceable propeller. Crank being 10k, propeller being 2k == 12k 50% = a $6,500 crank.
Edit: I don't math very well
At that price, I'd sooner buy a mid time motor and take my chances (or swap out to the IO-360 but if that crank goes bad you have no options but new)
That's just one man's opinion. Cranks and Sumps are getting harder to find every year.

Buddy McGown went thru this about 7 years ago. He paid for and rec'd 3 different (C-145/8-bolt) cranks....all of which he paid to have certified...all of which failed...before he finally found one which could pass the recertification. He paid $5K for that last one, if I recall correctly.
Cankcases are much simpler....plenty of them around.

I don't remember the exact numbers but when I bought my new crank for $4000 in 2006 from Continental, they had reduced the price several thousand dollars because I sent my old one back as a core which they destroyed. It was cracked anyway and had no value. I don't know if they still do that but I suspect they do.
If your 8-bolt prop is still good, it might be worth the same as a 6-bolt in the same condition. Just a thought, the prop cost could be a wash.

Bought a tagged C145D crank for 7000 about 6 mos ago. Good luck finding one as it was hard to find. Steve

So, am I correct in reading below that an IO-360 crank will work in the O-300? Assuming the number of bolts for the prop is correct.
What engines have what number of prop bolts? I think the early C-145, O-300A, O-300B, O-300C? had 8 bolt flanges and only the O-300D had 6. Is that correct?

No not correct.
0-300 C, D and E cranks have 6 bolt prop flanges.

Thanks for setting me straight Bruce. Do you happen to know if the IO-360 crank is compatible with the O-300 engine?

Hmmm. So depending upon my luck. A crank will be 5 to 10 thousand. I also have no prop at this point so a prop of some kind would have to be purchased. Thanks for the info gents.

You might do better (financially) finding an operational engine to hang onto your airplane rather than selectively locate individual pieces to assemble an engine.

But, that will be a 6 bolt flange. Anyone know if that's the same part number for the IO-360?
