wheel pants?

I have the orig. pants for my 170A but I had to get the nuts that hold the outside. I bought a set and the holes don't line up with the axle. The hole on the nut is past the hole in the axle. Is there a difference in 170B's and 170A's? I would buy the correct ones if someone has a set if there is a difference.

Axle nuts are the same for all 170 models for wheel pants. Part # 0441130

So your saying that when you spin on the nut and set the correct preload on the wheel bearings, that the cotter hole in the nut does not line up with the hole in the axle.

Assuming all is right with the bearings you have three chooses as I see it. Run the nut up so the bearings are preloaded correct and back it off till the holes line up. Run the nut up so the bearings are preloaded correct and tighten more just enough to line up the cotter pin. Or find or make a shim washer that allows the correct preload on the bearings with the hole lined up.

Thanks, I will have to get a spacer cause the hole on the axle and hole on the nut are nearly a full hole off.

You might post of picture as there are others out there that are similar. 182 for example is longer.

So to be clear you have the wheel mounted, the nut tightened, then backed off so the wheel spins freely and the axle nut has run on such that its holes, have pasted the holes in the axle?

I think it must be that your wheel pants will only fit my aircraft. :)

you might try loosing the inboard mounting screws ( on the backing plate) and re-align the wheel pant to fit the mounting bolt holes in the axle nut and the wheel pant. then re-tighten all hardware.

Tom I think he's talking about the axle nut cotter key hole not lining up with the bearing preload set. Adjusting the pant would have not effect on this alinement.

If I understand what you are describing...that should not be a problem. How tight are you tightening the axle nut when you are attempting to install the cotter? (Are you using a torque wrench? your hand? a BFW?) There is no specification that I've found on this axle nut, but common practice is to tighten it as absolutely tight as you can by using your hand only and then use the nearest cotter-pin hole. Others prefer to tighten the nut until the wheel demonstrates an inclination to "drag" when spun, then loosen the nut to the first available cotter pin hole.
The point is that the bearings should be snug...not loose when the assembly is complete. (Keep in mind that the slope of the bearing cone/cup will cause the pair to mate, but you do not want any "chatter" to be possible. A slight "preload" on the bearing is prefereable.) In any case, the nut will rarely align perfectly with the cotter pin hole when the nut is snug and it's a subjective judgement as to whether one should tighten to the next available or loosen to the last available hole. I prefer slightly tight ...rather than loose. (Bearing wear and can accept the preload much better than looseness.)

If that is the case, he has the wheel on wrong in some manner. If the axle nut has passed beyond the key holes there is some thing a miss.
