Axles

Somewhere, I can't find the post now, somebody was asking about axles; hollow aluminum vs solid aluminum vs hollow steel. My 1953 180 is equipped with hollow steel axles and for many years was operated on skis in Alaska. The records never show it having a broken axle. One time many years ago, according to the records, a ski broke through a glacia and wiped out a landing gear and a wing plus other damage, :( but the axle did not break even then. (I am still wondering how they got the wrecked plane off of the glacia) :?: Aircraft Spruce lists the hollow steel axles for $325.95 Part# 05-00481.

Harold! I can actually HEAR you say it that way with your sweet Georgia accent. GLACIA! Whoo-eeee! Everyone greatly enjoyed hearing your radio conversations on the way up and back down the Outer Banks during the convention. So many commented so favorably of your great accent!

OK George, I have looked it up in the dictionary and it is spelled GLACIER, but it still sounds like it should be spelled glacia to me. I still wonder how they got the wrecked plane off of the GLACIER.

Have fun,
