The International Cessna^® 170 Association

I just purchased a '52 C170B that has been somewhat kitted for bush flying. The only thing I'd like to change are the currently fitted 6x6 tires to something like a 8x6. The aim is not to go all Alaska but simply to get more clearance for some off field landings - farm roads and the like.

Any advice on what tires and tubs to fit will be appreciated.

In the assumption that your airplane is fitted wuth Cleveland wheels and brakes (Most C-170s today are.), you can usually install either 8:00 x 6 or 8:50 x 6 tires without fear of the brake caliper rubbing the tires. (or do they spell it "Tyres" in S.A.?) It may be a requirement of your aeronautical authority (FAA) for permission to install other than stock size tires.

A suggestion; Keep a can of "Lion-Away"" in the airplane. If you land out in the bush and a friendly lion was to pee on them, it might lead to the destruction of the magnesium wheels.

Yes it has the Cleveland's. I am not sure about the local regs regarding non-standard "tyres" will have to check with my mechanic but I don't foresee a problem.

Any recommendations for brand of tire?

By the way it's not the lions one has to worry about but the darn Hyenas. If they come past they like to chew on the tires. Trick is to cover the tires in thorn bush. The other problem are the elephants that have been know to rub against a parked Cessna and completely ruin the pilots day.

When we say stock size tires here in the USA that is 6 x6, 7 x6 and 8 x 6 as those are all allowed by the TCDS. I'm not particular to any brand tire so would probably shop by price.
