I have a 0-300-D installed in a 170, and the dip stick only shows 5.5 Qts when 7 is added.
What is the proper part number for the 170 dip stick?

Here is a good thread on the subject
http://www.cessna170.org/forums/viewtop ... lit=531081
TLDR: "The correct PN for an O-300 engine installed in a 170 is: 628410A1"
My O-300-D still has the dipstick from the 172 it came out of. I have a 170 stick but it seats into the oil tube differently.
This seems to be a common thing with motor swaps as it's been mentioned a lot on the forum and 170 sticks are rare.
I measured and marked the correct calibration and made a note of it.

Unless you are fortunate to locate a 170 dipstick I agree with David. Drain your oil and as you add each quart of oil, mark that on your existing dipstick. That is what I did and it works

My oil Gauge Rod is in fact a 531081, and it does read 1.5 qts low.
Thanks for the link to the previous discussion.
