I am in need of a new cowling for my 55 170b. I have not found anything good at the salvage yards. So, will an older model cowling work with my engine baffles or would I need to change them too.

The 1948-1952 cowling uses an airbox-style baffling, they went to the pressure-cowl type baffling in 1953. You might be able to use an early 172 cowl. Is your entire cowl need replacement,or just the top or bottom half?

A lot of planes have changed from the early to the later baffle arrangement using the early cowls. It works just fine. I sure like the large openings in the top of the early cowls.

thank you for the info, being able to use the other cowling opens up a bigger pool of parts at the salvage yards.

Also you can look at straight tail 172 cowlings.
