Is there an STC for the solid Maule t/w or is it only for the pneumatic?

The Maule 3-24B or the hard tire model as you referred to it is actually the standard from the factory tailwheel. It is in the IPC and included on the TCDS. No STC is required. I've only ever seen one 170 in the hundereds I've seen with a 3-24B installed. Why would you want such a small tailwheel?

The Maule SFS-1-2P8 or the pneumatic model as you referred is also on the TCDS and so no STC or further approval is required. I've seem maybe ten 170s with this wheel installed.

The question is why would you want to install any Maule tailwheel? While all tailwheels can give you trouble the Maule tends to be more problematic because there is no dampening mechanism built in like the Scott 3200. With the Maule everything must be in good repair and perfectly aligned.

You will pay more for a Scott and there is a reason. It is money worth spending over a Maule.
