170 landing gear

I am new to the forum, but am finally in a position to purchase a 170. I see a lot of different comments in ads about the gear, lady legs, pong mods, 180 gear, etc. can anybody give me an explanation of what all this means and what a high time pilot, with low time in a tail dragger should be looking for?

The TIC170 Association now owns the STC to install C-180 gear legs on the 170 and early 180s. If you are looking at a plane that has 180 gear and the STC is not in the paperwork, we can take care of that, for a small fee of course.

New question(s): I have a set of original 170 gear, not currently installed, that have 2 holes drilled all the way through instead of the single hole depicted in the parts catalogue drawing. These two holes are offset from each other and one is about 1" from the front edge of the spring while the other is 1" from the rear edge of the spring. They are lower on the spring than the single hole. I believe these are also for a brake clamp, but I can't find a picture or part number for a clamp that would attach at that location. Does anyone have this configuration? Is it ok for a 170A? (sorry I don't have a picture)
Also, the parts catalogue has 2 part numbers for 170A landing gear springs with a change happening at airframe S/N 19219. How do you tell the two apart or are they the same with just a parts number revision? I don't see it mentioned in the TCDS. This question was asked in a previous post back in 2007 (concerning a possible AD against the gear) but was not answered. If it has been previously addressed, I apologize for bringing it up again.

Harlow what you might have is an early 140 spring. Early 140 springs had two holes for a step though I don't remember if they are arranged as you describe this despite specifically looking at them just yesterday.
Late 140s (A models) I believe had just one hole in the center. It is popular belief that 170 and early 170As had the exact same 140A gear with a single hole through it. This is what my 170A has. The later part number is the exact same gear but the hole is only a dimple. So the early part number has a hole through and the later part just a dimple.

Here is a picture of the early 140 gear and the step with two holes through the gear. I don't think this is what Harlow described but it could be.
