Does anyone have a copy of a 337 for an Odyssey battery in a 170? There is a link to one in the MX Library, but the link is dead.
Thanks,
DEM

F AtLee Dodge of Alaska has the popular STC for it.

Thanks. The Atlee Dodge part is pretty nice, but my battery already got moved once as part of the Lycoming engine STC, and I wasn't in the mood for moving it again. I just modified the original box. I've got a slew of 337's I'm about to turn in on the airplane (new starter, oil filter, fuel flow monitor, etc....) so doing another one for the battery is no big deal. I was just looking for some wording and data to reference instead of dreaming and digging it all up on my own.

DEM the Odyssey battery is difficult to get ahold of by name. Most supply places are selling the equivalent since I am hearing Odyssey is getting away from this battery model in their production. Be careful of getting a 337 that states Odyssey specific rather then battery size. You will have more versatility then chasing the elusive Oddesey. Also, I dont believe you will be allowed to wedge the smaller battery in the old battery box. that is not an acceptable practice. That is why F. Atlees stc is so attractive. D

West Coast Batteries,
http://www.odysseybatteries.com/batteries/sbsj16.htm, is selling these SBS J-16 Odyssey batteries. Their ad indicates they are certified on the 170, 180, 195 using the F. Atlee Dodge STC. I have had one Field Approved and mounted on the firewall on my C-195 since 2007 and it is still going strong.
I have had one of these,
http://www.odysseybatteries.com/batteries/pc625.htm, Field Approved and mounted on the firewall on my C-180 with an O-520 since 1997. I am on the 2nd battery now but is getting weak after 9 years. The PC625 would probably fit in the existing 170 battery box better than the SBS J-16.
I did not call them to check on availability on either one.
I replaced the first PC625 on the C-180 about 9 years ago because it was getting a little weak. I put the old one on my riding lawn mower and it is still going strong.
I have had a Concorde RG-25XC battery in the C-170 since 2006. It still holds 12.5v after resting for a month. I would replace the existing Concorde battery in the 170 with another Concorde RG-25XC because of no paperwork/modifications required and the 25XC is a sealed AGM battery just like the Odyssey and the quality is just as good.

So... in your opinion the Concorde RG25XC is superior to and does not require the addt'l approval of the Odyssey?

The Concorde RG 25XC is a direct replacement, does not require any paperwork to make it legal, and does not require any modification of the airplane. It is an AGM sealed battery like the Odyssey and lasts just as long in my experience.
So, all things considered, YES, I say the Concorde RG 25XC is a superior battery for the 170.

+1 for the Concorde RG 25XC
I've had one in my plane for 4 years now. Dead of winter after sitting for 2 months and it swings the prop like I just put it in.

What is the difference in weight and cost?

The point I was attempting to make is ... that I have read many conversations in which all sorts of twisting and turning and sweating goes on when an owner wants to make an unconventional modification to his airplane to use some exotic new solution.... when there already exists a simple solution (usually strongly resembling the original design.)
Sometimes someone goes to the trouble and expense to convert to the unconventional solution but then loses/misplaces the approval paperwork ...and the subsequent owner (or the original) now finds himself at annual inspection without an approval basis.... when the unconventional installation wasn't all that much improvement to begin with.
So.... if a fairly standard aircraft battery (like the Concorde) can be simply installed into a fairly standard existing mount.... and if it performs similarly to the exotic paperwork-required unconventional solution.... then why do the difficult? KISS.

Same weight, plus or minus, and cheaper in the long run compared to pink batteries.

I'll +1 for the Concorde AGM battery as well. Had one in my PA-12 it performed marvelously for years with zero maintenance.
That being said, it won't work in my plane. Due to some other mods done to the plane, about the only battery that would fit in the space I had without major surgery or relocations was the Odyssey. And for those same reasons the Atlee Dodge STC wouldn't work either. I bought the SBS J16 (PMA'd version) and modified the Cessna box. It works good and looks good. Just need to complete the paperwork now. I can handle the mechanical side, but I was really looking for a 337 to see how the electrical side was referenced. (Is a full Electrical Load Analysis needed?)
Thanks,
DEM

DEM-
Here is a copy of the Field Approval I got for the SBS-J16 on my C-195 with a 300hp Jacobs. It will work fine on the 170, there is lots of cranking power with that battery. The same verbage should work for the Field Approval. The pictures show the installation with and without a ground service plug.
As you can see, the firewall battery has been installed since 2006. It is still the same battery and it is still strong.
The picture quality is not so good because I had to reduce the quality to get them to upload.
If someone wants to put this in the Maintenance library, I can send full res pictures via email to them.

This annual I wanted to change out my battery.,a Concorde CB-25 but the local supplier, only supplies Gill. So I'm still using the battery I installed in 2006. After reading this discussion, I think I'll go the RG Concorde route. I'd like to save weight with an Odyssey but I'll try a new diet first.

Also according to their website Concorde has discontinued the CB flooded battery line and recommends the RG sealed battery as replacement
