Wing Fuel tank cover panels 170A

Can someone confirm the correct installation of the wing fuel tank cover panels, i.e, under the leading edge, over the outbd and trailing edges, and over the inbd\cabin roof panel? The IPC is hard to depict this. It is the inbd\cabin that concerns me the most.. The panels were off and tanks out , when I received the project.

Thank you,
Rick

I just went to your post, (that I should have found earlier) but your cabin top skin is not like mine. Mine is not "notched" at the fwd and aft areas.
The cabin roof skin runs in a straight line (fore-aft)and has "large" openings for the screw locations. It appears to be original to the aircraft.
Hmmm..

I can check my 49 170A on Saturday if you don't get an answer by then.

That would be great if you could do that. I'm most concerned with the inbd\cabin roof seam. I'd really appreciate it ...

Thanks,
Rick

Rick, i went to the airport today but have to apologize, I forgot to take my camera (would probably still trying to figure out how to post the photos). I did look at the airplane though. The forward and inboard edges of the cover are under the leading edge and cabin roof skins respectively and the outboard and rear edges are on top of the wing skin. The screws that pass through the cabin roof skin and tank cover have counter sunk washers and flat head screws, all of the other screws are truss head screws. I don't have the faintest idea if this is the way Cessna intended to have it installed but seems to work and looks good. Hopefully some other "A" owners will chime in.

Tim,

Thanks for the info.. No pictures needed. I went back and looked at mine, and it is supposed to be as you said. I could see a faint line on the tank panel edge at the wing root, which meant it would have been under the cabin skin as you confirmed. The screw hole openings in the cabin skin are also made for the countersunk washers as well. Thanks again for taking the time, and helping with this.. Now I can get them installed for good..!

On my 170A the forward and inboard edges of the cover are under the leading edge and cabin roof skins and the outboard and rear edges are on top of the wing skin. The screws that pass through the cabin roof skin and tank cover have counter sunk washers and flat head screws, all of the other screws are truss head screws. That is the way it has been on every Cessna fuel tank lid I have ever worked on. I have never worked on a rag wing 170 so do not know how they are installed.

I have had the same problem with my fuel tank skins. I have agree with metal master totally. That's what I have done . Plus I have placed a sealing tape over the tank to cabin skin joins as it leaked water big time into the cabin in a real downpour .
