Thanks to member Marv Pugh, owner of the stars and stripes 170B, N2207D, here's the long-sought-after orange battery box label. One version of it, anyway.

I had to shrink the picture a little to post it, so if anyone wants the full picture Marv sent me, send me an email through the forum and I'll send it to you.

I think this is what it says:
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS
ALWAYS ADD WATER -- NEVER ADD ACID.
NEVER FILL OVER BAFFLE NOR MORE THAN
1/4" OVER THE TOPS OF SEPARATORS.

Cool, another label to duplicate and a mystery solved.

The question is...

When was this label first used? On the surface, N2207D is an early 1952 B model, but did the battery box lid come off of a later airplane? Nevertheless, that is an AWESOME find!!! The only thing that would make it better were if a ruler were in the shot as well to give an indication of scale, or if there were a way to determine the shade of orange used.

When Jughead posted a picture of N2207D I was reminded that I'd looked at it when I was airplane shopping in 2007. I went back through my pictures and saw one with the battery box label. I didn't know it was rare at the time. My camera was low res and I didn't get a good shot. So I looked up the airplane in the Members Directory and got Marv's phone number. He was happy to help, and took a good picture. I posted a cropped version, but Marv's picture has the whole battery box cover, which could give a decent estimate of the label size. I sent that picture to Ryan today. If anyone is interested in exact measurements, call Marv.
