How would YOU set a rivet like this? I'll post a photo in a few days of how Mountain Airframe is going to do it. Extra points if anyone knows what this rivet is for.

Don't know Miles but it looks like they might be pricey given the packaging.
David, I've never seen the lock fasteners in our airplane's wing struts apart, but they're not the Hilocks I know. I thought as well during the B model run, the later years had flush fasteners in the strut but I'm not certain.

The older airplanes had hi-locks, and the newer ones had flush rivets. I don't have an IPC handy, but I think the change was with the 1954 year models.
Jim, Del said he is not in the habit of buying hardware from Cessna, but that is the only place he could find these. They are a bit on the uncommon side in that they have an 82-degree head angle rather than 100.

We double shoot this size of rivet using two rivet guns. A three or four X gun on the manufactured side and a two X on the shop side with two flush rivet sets. (No bucking bars) The person driving the larger gun starts first to keep the rivet from being driven out by the second gun. The material you are shooting through is so massive trying to use one gun will not work because the "strut" or other mass absorbs to much of the rivet guns energy.

When setting the big built up spar rivets on a RV-6, I used the "C" frame and a five pound sledge hammer.

Both my '52s have hi-locks.

These are the Hi-locks that I'm used to

Maybe these found their beginning way back when with Cessna.

Hi-locs are threaded fasteners. The original fasteners were Hi-shear rivets with a driven collar.

Wow Jim, I never knew there were so many different styles of rivets! Don't know what the one Miles is showing us is, but like several others, it looks like a lift strut attach fitting rivet. I know my pop-rivet tool won't handle it

I remember removing rivets from the outer 40 ft section of the wings on a B-36 and those were (I think) high sheer rivets, but to remove them we used a pneumatic cutter that cut the collar off so the rivet itself could be driven out. Pretty heafty items.

Just looked it up.
High Shear pin rivets.
http://avstop.com/ac/apgeneral/rivets.html
I was mistakenly calling them hi-locks all this time.
Per the IPC, an AN5-20A Bolt, AN960-516 Washer and AN365-524 Nut can be used as an alternate on SNs 20267 thru 26038 and flush rivets were used serial number 26039 and on.
