I saw her at Oshkosh. Was that you that flew it in?

That airplane was based about 75 miles from me for many years. Always was a nice airplane. Congratulations on the new purchase!

About forty years ago, a good friend and machinist made me some new ones out of nylon, have held up great. Small job for a good machinist. Also made some seals for the pull out vents from the same material. The vents are tight and stay where you put them. Any good little local machine shop could do this.

The "balls" are available from Univair http://www.univair.com/search.php?search_query=0411224
Wag-Aero used to sell teflon versions of these for much cheaper but doesn't seem to offer them anymore.

McFarlane sells the universal joints http://www.mcfarlane-aviation.com/Produ ... goryID=268

You can start with a 1 1/2" Delrin ball from McMaster-Carr p/n 9614K39 $3.53 each. Just needs a 3/4 inch hole drilled through the middle. Owner produced part.

Jim already joined. But like many who join, he either missed or did not understand that he must ask to have his forum privileges upgraded. In his case as I have done for others, I've connected the dots from his post lacking an upgrade and his application for membership. And and you can see his privileges have been upgraded. Wish this process was automatic but it is not.

Thanks for all the great replies....outstanding. Nope, that was previous owner at Oshkosh. Calling sources about 'joints and balls' ....the ones in 28C are tired but airworthy. Yes, I did join 170 association but was unaware of 'upgrade' requirement...thanks much for doing that ! Jim N4628C

These balls are the best material I could find based on advertised specs, I have no actual experience with them. Any good machinist can center-drill the correct size holes for you.

I've been unable to find any in ball shape, but Delrin AF is what you want -- it's "Teflon-filled Delrin", meaning it's got particles of PTFE uniformly mixed into the plastic. Very low friction. But regular Delrin is perfectly suitable for the task.
