I fell into some baffling or 55 170B project that was removed from an O-300D engine. Looking at it, it all seemed like it would fit just fine...Untill I tried installing the upper cowl. The side baffling pieces appear to be a bit to wide as well as the two large rear pieces of the baffling, seems they need to be bent in or trimmed off. Anyone else have experience with baffling from an O-300D?

I cant seem to track down any good photos of what it all looks like installed.

There shouldn't be any difference 0-300 A or D. As the 170 never came with a 0-300 D, there is no baffling for it specifically.

The fitment of the engine cowling has two issues:
1- fitment to the engine (which would fit a O300D, for example)
2- fitment to the airframe cowling (which would fit an O300D to a Swift. Or C-172. Or ???)

So buying baffling which claims to fit a particular engine does not mean it fits a particular airplane.
Besides,.... how do you know the '55 170B had an original cowling? Or that it properly fitted?

We have a very respected member who bought via long distance the gear legs off a '55 170B. But when he got them, he was very disappointed to find
he actually had EARLY 170A/B gear....not the "lady legs" he thought were advertised. The seller insists they came off a '55 B model.
And they probably did.
The problem is...they weren't original to that airplane and the seller either was ignorant of the fact or didn't care to mention that in his advert.
The new owner is still stuck with them years later, feeing he was cheated.

Hope this helps those who buy used parts.

(Moral: use part numbers and buy parts which are traceable and if used, returnable.)

Thanks for the tips. In my searches for baffling for my 55' 170B, I came across this baffling for basically free and was told it was removed from an O-300D and was off a fairly early model 172. My cowlings arent original to the rest of the airframe, that's for sure. Anyhow, it seems overall, no matter what, you need to "custom fit" what you acquire. This baffling is quite nice for the price I think I can make it work for sure.

The baffling for the C172 is not the same as the 170''s. The cowling is wider due to the nose wheel setup. Most of the D engines came from 172's. In the installation of an 0-300-D engine in the 170 the STC states KEEP your baffling. It can be trimmed both sides and the rear has to be trimmed lower and more narrow. Ron

Awesome! I have been reworking the baffling, If you have some that is usable, I will gladly pay for shipping. My 55 170B has the 59' style 172 nose bowl on it, not a bit deal I do not think. I will message you with shipping address and what not. Can do Paypal or whatever you prefer that will work.
