heat shield

Post by zero.one.victor »

A friend of mine was having her 1950 A model annualed,& the mechanic found that a heat shield mounted to the engine mount tubing adjacent to the RH (pancake muffler) tailpipe was unairworthy. He spent some time fabricating & installing a new one.
I looked in my 1948 IPC & couldn't find that part. My ragwing doesn't have it. In fact,I never heard of a 170 having one of those. I have seen them on 180's.
Is that heat shield an original part for 170's? For that matter,is it an original part on 180's?
I assume that the heat shield is to prevent the engine mount tubing from cristalizing or something from the heat of the tailpipe. Is this a big problem? Or is this a solution in search of a problem?
