Starter Clutch shaft oil seal

Post by Psmith »

Is there a seal or o-ring inside the starter clutch that can be field replaced in an original style starter? I feel my leak is due to both the clutch shaft outer seal and also due to oil leaking through the center of the shaft.

I re-named this topic (from Generator oil leak) to Starter Clutch oil seal, because that's more in line with your question.

The clutch shaft oil seal, PN 1910379 is the only seal in the area and is available from El Reno Aviation for $14.50. (They've recently gone up considerably from all suppliers.) Ph no. 800/521-0333
You'll also need the mounting plate gasket PN 653673, $4.15. (It's a great time to consider whether to replace the armature shaft seal PN 1867150, $14.50 as well.)

An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)

I just bought a starter overhaul kit from Fresno Air Parts for about $27. It has the bushings, brushes and seals for the starter. You will still need the gasket. Mine spins the engine a bit faster now. If you know enough to use wrenches instead of pliers, you can do the starter.

Pete:
I replaced my starter clutch shaft seal last spring with a new one from my local NAPA Airmotive. It was NAPA p/n 9859. I believe it was made by Chicago Rawhide, sold thru non-NAPA ouitlets as p/n CR 9859.
Some others on this forum told me tht they used p/n 9858,but when I bought one it was too thick,as I recall. Could be that some other (later?) starter housings use the thicker seal. Even after replacement, the starter clutch shaft on mine stuill weeps a tiny bit.
Oh,the armature seal in mine was p/n CR7537.
