170 flap actuator bracket??

Hello I am am new to the 170 having just purchased 48 170. I was practicing landings when on ground i noticed that only the rt flap was working. on further inspection noticed the attaching point for cable or rod to left flap bracket had failed, the bracket failed. Appeared to be just very thin aluminum with a hole for bolt. I received a a page of v number and was told there isn't actually a proper POH for 170. I mention this as I did slip the plane with full flaps to land at rather busy field. Should a slip be limited to no flaps? Next question is how best to get this fixed? Can a new bracket be obtained and riveted in place, or find a used flap with bracket to have installed? I am in Charleston SC. Thank you , Tim

Tim,
There was no such thing as a POH when the 170 was made so of course there could not be a proper POH. It does have a Airplane Flight Manual (AFM). The AFM is required to be in the aircraft when it is being operated. The Owners Manual is not approved and in some cases a marketing tool though it does have valuable information. There is no reason you can not slip a 170 or a 170A with full flaps.
The 170B is a completely different story. You never want to slip a B model with full flaps as the flaps block air movement over the horizontal stabilizer and elevator causing it to stall. The stall results in an immediate and extreme nose down attitude, some say nearly on its back or over vertical, which may not be recoverable depending on your altitude. And then most pilots might, after finding themselves looking straight down, pull hard on the elevator causing a secondary stall to deal with.
I'm not familiar enough with the '48 flap to suggest a repair.

Tim,
Merry Christmas and welcome! A ‘48 170 — now that’s my kind of Christmas present!

Congratulations! Now the next thing you need, if you havn’t got it already, is an Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC). You can download it free
here. If I read what you’re writing correctly it’s p/n 0520106, as shown in fig. 5-17, which broke.

A quick online search shows that p/n available at
KRN,
Airframe Components,
Preferred Air Parts, and
Univair.

Some folks who have had the same hole failure have repaired it by filing the broken part flush with the hole and drilling another hole with proper edge spacing adjacent to the original bolt hole. It slightly changes flap extension but not significantly, (I’ve been told).

I haven’t looked at the cost of the bracket ( I know if I do, Gary will post the info seconds before I post again )
Replacement looks straight forward but I’d also consider along the lines as Richards suggests doing a repair. I’d remove metal from the web, add a centre section restoring hole position then doublers on each side, restoring the web. But of course none of that is in the SRM

Looking thru my picture album, I found this picture of an A-Model flap bracket repair which appears to be close to what Jim is suggesting.
