The International Cessna^® 170 Association

I had some 180 gear legs (pn 0741001-1/2) installed on my 170B (sn 25190). They replaced stock 170B gear legs (pn 0541114). This work was done under an STC.

Unfortunately when the work was done, prior to a new weight and balance being completed, the new legs were not weighed, and the old legs have been sold. I realize this was a deficiency on the part of my AP.

Does anyone out there have the weights for the legs in question? Or have the ability to weigh some for me? I have called Cessna....no help.

Tony,in my opinion you chose wisely (or lucked out!) by installing the -1 & -2 part number 180 gear legs. Near as I can figure,these gear legs put the main wheels only about 1/2" farther forward than the stock 170 gear legs. The later 180 legs put the mains about 3-1/2" forward of the stock location. I have the later 180 legs & they make the tail too heavy--in other words,are too far ahead of the CG. The one good thing is that it's almost impossible to nose it over without really working at it. If I could pick which gear legs I wanted (the work was done by a previous owner),it'd either be the -1 & -2 180 legs or just the later 170 lady legs.
If it was me,I think I'd do a new W&B. There's a lot of inaccurate,outdated W&B sheets out there that have been ammended by so many "calculated" figures (or left unammended after some change,which is even worse). It's not too hard to do yourself,IF you have access to a set of appropriate scales. I wrote an article about weighing mine that was in The 170 News about a year ago.
If ya go that route,let us know what the arm for the main gear is--it should be about +21.5" (stock legs put it at + 22").
"Tailwheel Tom" Anderson at XP Mods ( http://www.xpmods.com) might be able to come up with some gear leg weights for you. He is very knowledgable about the various model Cessna gear legs. I think maybe he gets a little tired of fielding calls for free information (instead of for high dollar orders!) so if you contact him don't mention me please.
