Great. Thanks again. Next question. On this form I heard you can still get fairleads from Cessna . Looking for PN 0412006. Aileron cable fairleads. Does anybody know a good place to find these?

(I hope it should be evident that when switching Subjects that a NEW TOPIC should be created so we moderators don’t have to split topics and edit forums. Thanks.)

WELCOME! No problem...just thought I’d take advantage of a chance for a reminder to everyone...not just you... (since that was the second time I had to split the same topic.).

The PN 0412006 has been superceded to S338-7 and is available from Hill Aircraft Supply at
https://www.cessnaparts.com/?s=S338-7&post_type=product

Outrageously priced at $1.29.

Thankful for the information here. Knowing 0412006 translates to S338-7 allowed them to be found and ordered. Really curious if anyone else ran into this mental curveball. Knowing from the parts catalog that 0412006 is a fairlead, then this would imply that one fairlead is two halves plus the retainer ring clip. Sure enough, S338-7 has the description Fairlead with no photo, but it all feels right. Minimum order is 25 fairleads, done. In the box was 25 fairlead halves and no clips, or 12-1/2 fairleads with no clips. Does anyone happen to know if 0412006 in reality turned into two part numbers, S338-7 for the half piece and another part number for the clip?

The method I used to determine that PN 0412006 was superceded to S338-7 … was that I logged onto Hill Aircraft (Cessna Distributor) website, entered the PN 0412006… and the website replied “Out of Stock….this part has been superceded to S338-7..”

I agree that was not very helpful to let one know that the part-number change also involves the mysterious “split” into halves with no mention of the locking-ring. A call to Hill Aircraft Parts manager should provide an answer…and frankly, it’s disappointing that when you ordered the fairleads …that information was not provided. Perhaps he/she didn’t realize it either since the website actually is a direct-access to Cessna Inventory thru the distributors’ web-page. Their phone number is 1-800-998-7832

These fairleads are used in all models of 170 in differing amounts. The 170/170A uses several of them in the aileron circuit overhead the cabin. The elevator circuit uses them below the floor. And all three models 170/170A/170B uses them in the aft fuselage rudder cable circuits.

The presumption might be that if your fairleads are worn-out… the phenolic fairlead halves will be replaced…and the locking-ring will be re-used… but that is a goofy (and disappointing) way to fail in the parts-support business. :(

Thank you for the pointer on that! Here's the result of that phone call, and I might add that this guy was amazingly helpful and super willing to dig into it to figure it out. He went to the 1956-62 172/175 parts catalog and found part S338-7 as 29-18, which led to part S339-2 also listed as 29-18. And there it was, a part number for a fairlead half and a part number for a clip. When cross-referencing part S339-2 it also came up as another equivalent part number, S339-P2. He indicated that the P in a hardware part number typically indicated that it is plated in some way. Then he looked in the 1963-74 172 parts catalog to find S338-7 listed as 47-14, and also listed as 47-14 was S339-P2.

I found the 1956-62 172/175 parts catalog at this link: https://support.cessna.com/docs/custsup ... 257-12.pdf

and the 1963-74 172 parts catalog at this link: https://support.cessna.com/docs/custsup ... 529-12.pdf

Interestingly, page 79 in the 1956-62 172/175 parts catalog is missing and this is the page with the figure 29 listing. However, you can still see this connection in the part number listing index in the back by looking up S338-7. The part listed next is S339-2 and they are both 29-18.

The S339-P2 clips are available from Air Power in Arlington, TX a Cessna Distributor. Be aware that when ordering from them they will pay free shipping under certain circumstances, and I have had them simply U.S. Mail some lightweight parts such as this to me for ordinary postage. https://airpowerinc.com/s339p2

Gotta wonder if a couple wraps of safety wire wouldn’t suffice.

A lot of guys safety wire the fairleads on float cables. Safety wire won't come off if snagged by weeds, brush, or pants legs.
