Scary Stuff You Find

I thought I would start a new topic where we can share things we’ve found on our aircraft that are unacceptable. First off we can share items others should look for on their 170, secondly we can celebrate the improvements we get to make ;)

I’ll go first with a project I’ve got going. The visible end of the pitch trim tab pushrod was corroded and I looked a little closer and saw that the pushrod that is there looked home made. I ended up purchasing an original pushrod to replace it. Once I removed the home made one today I realized how bad it was. You couldn’t see 3/4 of it as it is inside the elevator. I’m so glad it is being replaced. The history on this plane is it sat in storage for over thirty years. I’m guessing that when it was put back together 20 years ago the mechanic made this pushrod in place of an original. It is scary how poor quality the part was. There are a lot of things wrong with it.

When my airplane underwent restoration… the restorer was surprised to find that the engine mount hardware holding the mount to the firewall…. were not AN hardware…but were BRASS. 8O

We just pulled the prop to send it out for paint and found the spinner back plate cracked about 70% the way around 8O
