The International Cessna^® 170 Association

Hi Guys. I am hoping I am not beating a dead horse on this. I searched through the previous forms and could not fin anything on elevator hinge bearings. I have a 1955 Cessna 170B. I need to replace the elevator hinge bearings. The IPC only shows the hole hinge assy. PN of 0534114-3. Figure 14 item 28. Does anyone have an option for a replacement bearing?

Check out Fig 16 Item 7, Torrington bearing AR4-1. A local bearing supply might have them for a reasonable price if you don’t mention “airplane”.

McFarlane has them under a superceded part number MS24462-4 . Sit down before you call them. ($90)

The bearing part number in Fig. 16-7 is AR4-1 rather than AF4-1. But that doesn't answer the question regarding the p/n for the outboard bearings on the horizontal stabilizer. Unlike the C-170B IPC, the L-19 IPC does give a part number for these outboard bearings on the horizontal stabilizer. It's NAS506-4 in fig. 158-12. NAS506-4 and AR4-1 both supersede to the part number George gave for the center elevator horn bearing, p/n MS24462-4. Another p/n that you might try Googling which matches this bearing is 4NCC910P - the RBC part number which appears on McFarlane's picture of the bearing and which is listed by McFarlane under their "Supersedures" tab. With a bit of searching you can find these bearings for a lot less than $90 each.

Pponk has p/n PPA1401.
It’s approved for the 180, 182, 185, and 206 models but not the 170 in their STC SA02213AK. That's unfortunate as it appears to me that it should be a direct replacement bearing for the C-170B elevator and rudder bearings. The bearings on these controls are very hard to inspect. On the rudder they sit in a well which traps water when it rains. My guess is that a majority of these bearings on our 170s are working as bushings rather than bearings --- the needle bearings are rusted/frozen.
