Dog house baffling for 170B

Does anyone have pictures of the pieces of the front portions of the Dog House baffling? No, don't take your cowling apart just for me but the Airforms pictures are not too clear. My IA has decided to reconstruct my well worn Dog House baffling and the front two pieces that go up next to the cylinders look considerably different from the Airforms pictures. Plus, there is a former along and under the front part of the dog house, the picture of which I cannot find anywhere, including in the IPC. Judging from other poor maintenance we have found on this bird during the first annual (which has been going on piecemeal since mid April, we are not certain what should be up front. Any pictures would help decipher this puzzle.

Are you asking for the baffles which go in-front-of #5 & #6 cylinders…VERTICALLY..? (which prevent too much cooling air hitting the exposed front of those cyls..?? )

I’ve not got a great solution for you, but in a “rush-to-respond” … I DID find an illustration of the later B-model installation…although it was found in the application of the earliest 172 engine cooling baffle illustration. The 1956-‘58 installation was similar (if not identical) to the later B-models with the pressure-cowl (not the “dog-house” cooling system used on 170/170A and ‘52 170-B models.) Anyone with a ‘53 or later B-model cowling/engine-baffling system might consider parts intended for “code A” which applies to 172 SN 28000…which should be useable on the latter B-models.

The parts identified as “item 1A and 7A” might work for the earlier airplanes with minor alterations. Hope this helps.

It’s a shame the 170 IPCs are so lacking in information.

I’m posting them for edification…not identification:

George, my interpretation is that he’s asking about the plenum baffle system on 1952 and earlier 170s.

That is also what I interpreted…but also thought he’s asking about the front #5/6 cylinder baffles**…. maybe we need clarification..??

** The front cyls (5/6) receive a blast of air to their forward faces…unlike the aft cylinders…and therefore are not cooled uniformly. The rest of the cylinders have a “down-flow” system of cooling and the 5 & 6 cyls cooling is disrupted by the relative wind. In order to cool all cyls uniformly….a “dam” or front-baffle is often installed to block direct relative wind for #5 and #6…. as depicted in later installations.

Thanks for the page photos which I already had access to. They are helpful but somewhere on this site I found a picture of a 170B with the cowling removed which helped even more. The "roof" of our baffling had a former on one side and no former on the other when removed. That was the first puzzling part. The left front baffling had a square hole in it which we could identify in your pics and the pics of an actual plane. we were also puzzled because the baffling we took off appeared to block air to the front left and right cylinders. Now I understand why. Thanks again.

One more from two years ago. Pre buy and annual. This airplane sat in a heated hangar for 13 Years before I got it in January of 2020

Don’t know if these pictures will help but I had Airforms build their first set of 170A baffles for my 1951 170A. They used my original baffles for a pattern and got them pretty close but I still made some modifications to suit my preferences for a better seal. The red baffle seal material was installed by me after removing the Airforms supplied bulb-style baffle seal material that you can still see on the upper baffle halves.

The upper airbox support looks like it is made from elevator or rudder corrugated stock material. The one in the pictures is the original one from Cessna.

The pictures are low-res to meet the limitations of the website. I have a hi-res copies I can send if you need them, contact me directly by PM with your email address and/or phone number.

All of those pictures were extremely helpful and I believe we are making progress. Thank you to all. Mike K.
