Thanks Bruce, I figured you would figure it out!

The pilot was a WWII navy ace.

Link doesn't work because the period at the end for some reason didn't attach to the link. Looks like an aritfact of typing it out on here (automatic periods happen on the ipad and iphone a lot) but it's part of the link.

Watching it now, super cool. Alaska was still a territory when this was made.

This link is weird. It won't work no matter what if you remove the period. I tried. And it won't work when cyphered with the phpBB url code such as in the OP. Put copying and pasting the raw url with the period in your browser will get you to the movie.

I have never seen the ski cables attached to the lift strut.

Tim, looking at the field approval for the skis on that airplane all it says is, "New WESCO skis installed. Model AS2B 2500. Skis installed in the conventional alaskan manner with shock cords and cables." While the aircraft in the movie says "Wien Alaska Airlines" on the side, the registration data on the FAA's website says it was owned by Cordova Airlines. However, Wien Alaska Airlines did own a C-170A, N9060A, shown below.

Looking at the FAA data for this plane gives a little more information on "the conventional alaskan manner" of installing skis as seen in the attached file. That information is considered "approved data' for duplication on a C-170A.

How about the 1954 Movie "THEM", opening scene has a 170B flying for the New Mexico State Police department looking for a lost little girl.

I remember at least one episode of Sky King where he flew a 170.
